» What price do we put on Good health?

Good health.

What price do we put on our health? For many it is recognised as the precious gift it is. For many others it is taken for granted; only valued when it is threatened, or destroyed. Many choose to drink to excess to ease stress, anxiety or simply to help them to unwind after a busy day. Others choose to smoke, often for the same reasons.  Those who choose these reasons to damage themselves should recognise what they are doing. They are punishing their body for the way they feel in their mind.

If we saw one person committing a criminal act and then another person being blamed for it and punished, we would cry out that a miscarriage of justice had occurred.  Yet when we do it to ourselves we choose not to recognise it. Punishing the body for how you feel in our mind is simply not wise, it’s not fair to your body, and that means yourself.

Sooner or later the body or mind will react to that punishment, often presenting cancer, stress, depression, heart attack or any number of other conditions caused by the abuse of body and mind over many years.

Sooner or later we have to wise up before it’s too late; we have to recognise that one day we will pay the price, and it is often a high price.  Abuse too is not confined to smoking, drinking or taking illegal substances, we can abuse our body by lack of sleep, working constantly long hours and ignoring the warning signs. If we don’t eat properly and exercise, if we constantly expect our mind and body to work at a high rate, without adequate rest, we are courting disaster. And once our health is damaged, we may never get it back. Why decide to stop smoking once the damage has been done and operations are needed to try and maintain some balance of well-being? Why not stop before the damage is done, and then we can make the most of our health. The same applies to excess drinking or illegal drug taking.

Why do we choose to wait until our stress levels are so high that we can’t think properly before we seek help? It may be a combined belief of ‘it won’t happen to me attitude’ and not recognising the signs, even though others do!   Also perhaps due to the many demands we face today we may not ‘have time for ourselves’.  If people choose to believe this and live like this, that of course is their choice, but sooner or later, the price may be paid, and the precious good health we take so much for granted will be lost or impaired, and it can be a long road to recovery for the individual and the people who have to look after them.  Doesn’t it make more sense to be aware of our human frailty, to take responsibility for our life and good health of mind and body?  I have used the word “choose” several times in this article. It is up to the individual to choose what is right for them, and at that time, I hope they choose to come for a chat.
