Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) 10% Discount April 2008
Most people will have come across the initials IBS at some time in their life. Those three little letters stand for a big problem named Irritable Bowel Syndrome. So big a problem in fact that it affects up to 1 in 5 of the population at some time in their lives.
It is responsible for the massive costs of diagnosis borne by the NHS, as it cannot be self diagnosed and some of its symptoms are similar to more serious conditions.
It can have a huge impact on relationships; it can result in holidays and days out being cancelled. It also reduces the individuals’ quality of life (QOL) significantly. In addition to the physical symptoms of IBS, which include, but are not limited to, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea and urgency to go to the loo, it often brings an emotional aspect which is often ignored or misunderstood.
For many IBS sufferers a simple journey into town can be a nightmare, what happens if the shop doesn’t have a toilet, what happens if you’re a teacher in front of a class of pupils, a policemen or fireman on call. It is not unusual for confidence and self esteem to slowly but definitely drain away, sleeping pattern can be affected, memory and concentration are often affected as the constant worry saps away your emotional energies.
IBS does not just affect the sufferer but also family and friends too. No matter how understanding friends and family may be in the beginning, it is often difficult for them to remain supportive and understanding over a period of years. Even though IBS will not kill you, it can significantly affect the sufferer’s quality of life and mood.
And yet, there is hope.
Because it is well documented that hypnotherapy can help reduce the symptoms of IBS and their frequency. And that isn’t just me saying it (although I have for been for many years! ) but medical research trials have shown for over 20+ years that hypnosis is a valid treatment option for managing IBS. This has been reinforced by the recently released report of the National Institute of Clinical Evidence (NICE) which states that hypnotherapy should be considered when IBS patients do not respond to drug treatments after 12 months and who develop continuing symptoms. This report affirms that progress is being made in the wider acknowledgment of hypnotherapy and its benefits in this area. It has been my experience that hypnotherapy can be considered a first line of treatment in concert with your medical professionals care. By addressing the brain-gut component of the condition early on, the patient may be able to avoid months and even years of pain and discomfort, and even help to minimise or eliminate the severity and frequency of the symptoms. As April is IBS Awareness month, the IBS Audio Program 100 which is a home use audio program specifically developed for IBS, is discounted until the end of April.
