Hypnotes January 2008

Good bye to 2007, welcome to 2008.  The passing of another year usually makes us stop and think, to reflect on the old year, and to plan and look forward to the new, with our wishes and hopes, dreams and determinations.

The summer holiday adverts begin to be shown on the television, new holiday brochures showing exotic places, happy smiling faces looking back from the glossy pages. The kids have gone back to school.  Yet many may of us may be wondering how to pay the credit card bill when it comes in later this month, reassuring ourselves that one way or another things will work out.

And they usually do, given time. So we shrug off the doubtful thoughts and look forward to better times and new challenges.

It is also a time when we think about our health and taking better care of ourselves. January and February are usually the months when we start to think a little more about making healthy changes in our lives, changing our body image, to lose weight, to stop smoking, to get more exercise, to change the stressful job and more.

And the following months are those when we tend to find excuses when we don’t follow through, when we don’t take the exercise, or stop the smoking. The reasons, and ‘justifications’ are common, it just wasn’t the right time or I didn’t have the time or It was raining, cold and dark! These and many other thoughts and behaviours are the things which hold us back. I will let you into a secret; as soon as we say ‘try’ we have failed!

Try to stop smoking, Try to lose weight, Try to some / more exercise.  The word try is often a pre-cursor to failure. So don’t try - DO!    Look in any online thesaurus and type in the word “Try”, and you will see such words as attempt, struggle, strive, aim, make an effort, and, have a go.  Hardly words to inspire us.

And yet our subconscious knows what we are doing, we are often making a half baked attempt at changing. Until we really want to, we won’t.  

Look in the same thesaurus and look up the word “Do”. Words like, accomplish, complete, achieve are listed. These are words to inspire us, to get things moving. 

So when you think Try, stop and think Do.  And then Do it!

There is nothing holding us back but ourselves, if we don’t have the drive or motivation or determination, then we have no one to blame but ourselves.

We cannot blame circumstances; if we wanted it enough we would make the right circumstances to be successful.
