The light at the end of the tunnel!
When things are difficult and on-going we often use or hear the phrase about the light at the end of the tunnel. The user of the phrase is basically saying that things are difficult, but there remains hope. Hope that the light will be the solution to the individuals’ problem. And yet if we think about that for a while, we often reflect that the tunnel is usually long, straight and dark, and imagining treading through that tunnel is like wading through treacle, that is to say it is not an easy journey.
And yet the light at the end of the tunnel, I feel, is self limiting, it is self sabotaging, it gives little if any motivation to keep going on the difficult journey. And things are difficult for many at this time, and those with greater brains than mine tell us to expect even more difficulties in the economy, which will have an impact on finance, jobs, prices and much more. And there is always an emotional cost to bear too the anxiety and worry, the sleepless nights and fears of job losses and more. Once the emotional price starts to be paid, that is when the phrase the light at the end of the tunnel is heard and used more often.
And yet, if we self sabotage ourselves by using that phrase, how can we expect to progress to better things, and to a more enjoyable way of life? One of the ways you could help yourself is this: If you imagine the tunnel as long and straight, with a faint glimmer of light at the end, then in your imagination, screw it up, and throw it away! Why? Because since the time you were born you have never had a long straight journey in your life. Life is a series of peaks and troughs, lefts and rights, twists and turns and ups and downs, and if you remind yourself of this at difficult times on your journey through life, you can realise that you only have to take a few steps forward and then look left or right and that’s where the light may be. Light doesn’t travel around corners, so you could be very close to a solution to your problem, or there maybe someone or something around the next corner that could help you. And if not, you can look forward to taking the next few steps and looking around the next corners, and this way you maintain a feeling of taking part in your own healing or solutions.
No longer with the sense of feeling that you just have to put up with whatever is going on and hope for the best. You can be, and do more than that. And perhaps that’s a message we should all heed in these more challenging times.
If something isn’t the way you want it to be, change it to something else, sometimes its scary, sometimes its exciting and always worth the journey. So when you hear people use that phrase, simply remind yourself that your journey doesn’t have to be trodden in the same way.
By continuing to grow on our journey through life, we can make our journey more fulfilling, rewarding, enjoyable and fun, regardless of what other people try to tell us.
