Breast Cancer October 2007
How quickly the time passes. October has come around again, and with it we are reminded also that it is Breast Cancer Awareness month. According to Cancer research UK, breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK, the figures are frightening, for example the same organisation quotes each year more than 44,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, that’s more than 100 women a day and each year around 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer too.
However there is good news too. More women are surviving breast cancer than ever before, as
breast cancer survival rates have been improving for more than twenty years. In the 1970s around 5 out of 10 breast cancer patients survived beyond five years. Now it's 8 out of 10 so things are getting better, but we all know more work has to be done.
Several years ago I developed a CD called ‘An aid to emotional recovery after breast cancer’ this is currently used or recommended or included in discharge pack in over 100 English NHS hospitals. This 4 track CD helps the breast cancer survivor to understand the emotional impact of the disease. Even though physical recovery is underway, very often emotional recovery lags behind, and this often catches the sufferer unawares. For those who have not gone through the trauma of breast cancer, most of us know someone who has. This CD is an ideal gift, and for each one purchased between now and the end of October I will donate 10% to Warrington Breast Cancer support group. Hard copies of this CD, or downloads can be obtained from my new website www.healthyaudio.co.uk (On line readers: This recording can be purchased on this site click here)
This leads me on nicely to my new Healthy Audio website. This site covers all my self help audio programmes which are available in hard copy or as downloads. Programmes cover Irritable Bowel Syndrome, chronic pain, Emotional recovery after breast cancer, Emotional recovery after cancer, stress, anxiety, and relaxation. I have a simply music CD, and the IBS companion which is an information CD ideal for explaining about the IBS condition to none sufferers. Other titles include insomnia, PND, Emotional Renewal. Reflective Words recording has 15 tracks of Reflective thought. It includes two equations of life often found useful when applied to the thoughts of dieters or those wanting to stop smoking, the light at the end of the tunnel, daring to do things differently, forgiving others, understanding your own feelings, self judging, the armies of thought, and three stages of healing, shadow fears and more. There is also An aid to stopping smoking programme. So next time you are surfing the net, visit www.healthyaudio.co.uk (On line readers: Your already here of course!)
And finally, while walking recently in the wind and rain, I passed a local church, and caught the eye of a man who was just turning to walk up the church path. He looked up and shrugged his shoulders,
“What a day!” he exclaimed. I stopped lifted my coat hood so I could see him better, and said “more green grass for the cows”. His face changed immediately, “I never thought of it that way” he replied and he went away chuckling. I brightened his day, just by changing his perspective. Regular readers will remember, change a thought, and you change the response!
