The Use of Guided Imagery and Clinical Hypnotherapy for the Treatment of Functional Abdominal Pain (FAP) and IBS in Adults and Children
Optimal management of IBS has shown greater success using a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach. The majority of independent research studies favor psychologic treatment, with hypnotherapy or guided imagery being the most effective, with follow-up studies showing continued benefit.1
The use of clinical hypnotherapy as a part of that approach has been clinically proven to be an effective treatment method over traditional methods used alone and is professionally recommended as a treatment option for IBS.2
A research overview of other independent studies showing the efficacy of the use of clinical hypnotherapy for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome with children and with adults is provided on this page for your reference.
The American Gastroenterological Association and the Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition points out that:
“It is no longer reasonable to discriminate between physiological and psychological factors; both are operative in IBS.
It is likely that dysregulation of the “brain-gut” neuroenteric systems, rather than the presence of structural disease, promotes the development and persistence of IBS.
While psychosocial factors are not part of the diagnosis of IBS, they have a significant effect on gut motility, symptom experience, and health outcome.”3
Clinical hypnotherapist Michael Mahoney, who holds a practice at the Guardian Medical Centre, Warrington, Cheshire, England and receives referrals from physicians and medical health care professionals, has developed two specialized practical and effective programs for both adults and children, that encompass not only the physiological aspect of IBS, but the psychological as well.
These clinically researched and established programs can prove to be a vital part of your treatment protocol for your patients presenting with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Abdominal Pain and related physical and emotional symptoms such as anxiety, well-being and quality of life.
Some of our referrals come from physicians, like you, who have investigated this option, and wanted to add this innovative, safe and effective treatment tool for their patients.
Because our company was established out of the need for availability of this effective treatment method, we do not rely on advertising, but rather, referrals from physicians and those who have been helped by our programs. We are totally self-funded and have absolutely NO conflict of interest.
MOST of our referrals come from patients who become frustrated along with their doctors, because all available options were exhausted and were not providing relief. Patients then turn to the internet to research the latest treatments. Reading about other patient’s positive experiences encouraged many to try the IBS Audio Program, even if out of desperation and as a last resort.
Now you can be a part of your patients’ total care and support by providing them with information about this complementary treatment option alongside your continued medical care.
Our feedback has shown that this treatment method has made a significant difference in the suffering and quality of many lives. We provide live support and speak with sufferers on the phone or via the internet, who have been so inconsolable, suffered so much and so long, that by the time they speak with us, they are ready to give up. Time and time again, our quiet efforts have been met with letters, phone calls and emails of grateful thanks from these patients.
This has been both humbling and overwhelming…
Clearly, the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from these severe refractory IBS patients, who had given up hope, indicates that we are doing something quite remarkable.
Most likely there are patients in your practice presenting with Functional Abdominal Pain and IBS symptoms that have been difficult to address, where every medication, diet, fiber regimen, probiotic and additional treatment protocol that you have provided has proven to be ineffective, or minimally effective at best.
This in turn, may have left you frustrated in providing the best care approach available, and your patients become discouraged as well. With children, this can prove to be even more exasperating, and for some, parents may be concerned about giving their children medications over the long term.
While there is no one specific treatment that proves to be effective for every patient presenting with Functional Abdominal Pain, and IBS symptoms, it has been shown through clinical research that the use of Guided Imagery or Clinical Hypnotherapy can be a helpful adjunct and complement to your arsenal of medical care.
The IBS Audio Program 100® for Adults and Teens and the IBS Audio Program 60® for Children provide recorded sessions on CDs or MP3 of guided imagery and hypnotherapy that replicate those used successfully in the clinical setting. Also provided are booklets of instructional information and guidance.
Both of these programs are now readily available for you to provide for patients in your private practice as an adjunct to your medical care, through patient referral to www ibscds.com for adults and teens and to www.childspain.com for children or with stock you supply from your practice.
Patients can also download these sessions as audio MP3s and printouts directly to their computer for their immediate use and convenience.
As a pro-active and forward-thinking medical professional, you are seeking out proven, new and innovative ways to effectively address these patients who endure on-going suffering…
Now you can do so.
Patient – Physician Perspective
By referring patients to the website links above or by directly providing the IBS Audio Programs for them, you are offering your patients a treatment method that has not only been used successfully by thousands of IBS patients, but you maintain care of the patient by providing this option to them personally. The patient has your continued support as this therapy can be safely used alongside any medications or treatments you may provide. The patient also receives on-going support from our website, and toll-free phone assistance, as well as the adjunct self-help websites that offer support and discussion by other users.

Guided Clinical Hypnotherapy in the Treatment of Children's IBS
Michael Mahoney, MDH, thp EndoNurse Magazine February/March 2009 p. 32.
01/27/2009
Editor’s note: Mahoney claims that research and patient trials regarding his Ongoing Progressive Session Induction Method (OPSIM) have shown success rates of 85 percent to 95 percent in the reduction of IBS symptoms. His hypnotherapy practice sponsored the UK’s first IBS Awareness evening at Liverpool University in 1997.
As a forward-thinking medical professional, perhaps you have at times become frustrated with patients who don’t get better even though all the procedures and treatments have been given. As a clinical hypnotherapist working with children and adult patients who have gastrointestinal disorders such as IBS, functional abdominal pain (FAP), and Crohn’s, I have seen first-hand how the brain-gut connection can be an integral part of the condition itself.
Guided imagery and clinical hypnotherapy addresses the brain-gut connection in IBS and FAP and has been established as a well-researched method for over 20 years.
Certainly in your daily rounds, you have evaluated children who are presenting with mild to severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both. Extensive medical evaluations and colonoscopies reveal nothing, so it is diagnosed as a functional disorder. From there, pain medications, antispasmodics, diet, fiber, exercise and similar suggestions are made.
As a caring professional, you may have watched this scenario unfold in the examination room — the fearful child subjected to an invasive examination — and you know most likely the outcome will be a functional motility disorder with about 20 percent of these little ones.
Often, parents come to me after all treatment avenues have been exhausted. By this point, a feeling of hopelessness has prevailed as the child falls into a familiar pattern of pain and refuses to go to school or take an active part in life.
Guided imagery is a means to break that mind-gut connection, where the child uses his or her subconscious mind to disconnect ingrained thought patterns. I explain that the brain and the “tummy” don’t always speak well to each other. Worry about such things as the constant need for the bathroom, about school, about pain, and so on, becomes so much a part of their thought pattern that it becomes a part of who they are and is manifested in their symptoms and subsequent responses.
But the child was not born this way, nor did they always have these difficulties, and so they can be replaced and relearned. I have found time and again that these little ones are great learners, eager to get better, and really want to take part in their sessions.
Every single child has shown remarkable improvement in their overall happiness and quality of life in addition to symptom reduction. They are able to return to school, and effectively use their imagery sessions when needed to reduce or eliminate their “tummy” troubles and pain.
After seeing many children progress over the years, a formal clinical trial project was developed to confirm and quantify the hypnotherapeutic protocols effective in the clinical setting, and to provide this therapy to the community via recorded sessions and instructional information. The IBS Audio Program 60® for Children was borne out of the increasingly greater numbers of children diagnosed with FAP and IBS who were visiting my practice.
Until now, children presenting with functional or recurrent abdominal pain and IBS would have a very limited availability of this treatment modality.
Following upon the successful completion of feedback, the sessions have been recorded and are available in MP3 download format with a print booklet and hard copy CD format. There is a parent guide session, and eight sessions for the child completed over the course of 60 days.
The instructional booklet includes symptom-rating charts, (one with colorable smiley faces), a listening schedule, information on IBS, FAP, and other related symptoms and emotional concerns, messages to the parent(s)/guardian(s) and to the child, full explanations and resource material as well as continued support via Web site, e-mail, or phone.
The impact of providing another avenue of treatment to this patient population not only assists the healthcare provider to work holistically with the pediatric patient, but also provides the children and parents with an ongoing tool to avoid further decline in the child’s health. Resources are provided for coping with the child’s return to school, which reduces and usually eliminates future school absences. This, in turn, gives the child a better future for learning, and eventually for employment.
There is such a need to eliminate suffering for these children and get their lives back on track. My greatest reward is seeing a child transform from one, who a few months before, was curled up in pain crying, to a happy, pain-free child who now greets me with a smile and a hug!

IBS Audio Program 60® for Children
The IBS Audio Program 60® for Children was borne out of the increasingly greater numbers of children diagnosed with Functional Abdominal Pain and IBS being seen in Michael’s practice. Having worked with children for various physical and emotional concerns for many years, a finely tuned and innovative protocol was developed especially for this group of suffering children.
After seeing many children progress with this protocol over the years, a formal clinical trial project was developed. Objectives were to confirm and quantify hypnotherapeutic protocols effective in the clinical setting, and to provide this therapy to the community via recorded sessions and instructional information.
The impact of providing another avenue of treatment to this patient population not only assists the health care provider to work holistically with the paediatric patient but provides the child and parents with an ongoing tool to avoid further decline in the child’s health as resources are provided for coping with the child’s return to school, reducing and usually eliminating future school absences.
This in turn gives the child a better future for learning and eventually employment. Future health care costs can be reduced through decreased physician visits in that the patient and parent take ownership of their own healing, as well as reduction or elimination of medications.
Further indirect costs to the parents are also avoided as the child improves and returns to school as there is no lost salary for leaving work, taking days off when the child is ill and home from school, or paying for a child minder.
The hypnotherapeutic protocol used for this study was developed over several years working with children having recurrent functional abdominal pain or FAP, IBS and related symptoms. Following upon the successful completion of feedback, the sessions have been recorded and are available in MP3 download format with a print document booklet and hard copy CD format. The instructional booklet includes symptom rating charts, (one with colourable smiley faces), a listening schedule, information on IBS, FAP, and other related symptoms and emotional concerns, message to the parent(s)/guardian(s) and to the child, full explanations and resource material as well as continued support via website, email, or phone.
In-House Clinical Trials
The IBS Audio Program 60® for Children research trials verify the successful efficacy established in the clinical setting, as well as findings from other research studies.
Before making the protocol available as a recorded program, in-house clinical trials were conducted which provided rankings upon completion of the therapy sessions and a one-year follow-up.
It should be noted that the sessions and methods used in the protocol for the study were also used successfully over several years with other paediatric patients.
The recorded sessions in the IBS Audio Program 60® for Children replicate the session protocol used in the study and clinical setting. In addition, the parent instruction is fully duplicated onto CD.
Further essential information and instruction for the parents, including answers to frequently asked questions, symptom rating charts and other imperative information are provided in the printed booklet which is included in the program.
Initial diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and/or Functional Abdominal Pain (also termed Recurrent Abdominal Pain or RAP) or Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder as well as related emotional and social concerns was provided by the child’s gastroenterologist or paediatrician.
Results
● All of the children – 100% - made positive gains upon completion of their therapy and in the months following.
● All of the children showed a range of 88% to 100% improvement in the majority of their individual presenting symptoms. Most children presented with all listed symptoms.
● There was an average of 97% of the children’s presenting symptoms that were improved.
● There was an average of 75.6% improvement of symptoms with a 43% to 100% range for all presenting symptoms.
● 100% of the children had a three to nine-fold increase in their overall happiness, wellbeing and quality of life, upon completion of their therapy and in the months following.
● The results of this study fully reflected the efficacy of the sessions found in the clinical setting where even incapacitated children could return to school.
Secondary Outcomes and Advantages
In addition to improvements ranked, further feedback indicated secondary outcomes – parents became closer to their children, the children received validation for their condition, which in turn, further helped their progress. The eliminated costs of lost work and child care provided additional indirect benefits.
The children indicated that the sessions were pleasant and easy to do, and they were pleased that they were feeling better – and as indicated by feedback – much happier overall.
Converting the protocol and instruction from the clinical setting to the IBS Audio Program 60® for Children provides an easy to follow solution for this patient population.
The IBS Audio Program 60® for Children can be completed in 60 days and also includes a guide to return the child to school in a structured and gently scheduled way that provides further care and support for the parent to give their child added success.
It also should be noted that the majority of children seeing Michael in clinical practice are those who have failed to see improvement with conventional treatment (medication, diet, other interventions) prior to receiving hypnotherapy. The first real relief was obtained upon completion of the hypnotherapy sessions.
As outlined above, the incorporation of the IBS Audio Program 60® for Children into the treatment arsenal of physicians, school nurses and other health care providers is a true demonstration of how the complementary approach using clinical hypnotherapy, can be easily and successfully integrated with conventional treatment, while providing a standardised treatment every time – no worry of ineffective delivery or content, or shortage of therapists in a specified locale.
Advantages of the IBS Audio Program 60® for Children for the Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
● IBS Audio Program 60® for Children (IBSAP) is readily available to the public now via MP3 Download and in CD format and folder.
● IBSAP for Children has already been proven effective for over five years in the clinical setting.
● Patient compliance with in-home intervention would be more likely with utilisation of the IBSAP due to no travel, no distance problems, personal schedule adaptability, and no need to accommodate patient incapacitation (bowel urgency, anxiety) levels.
● For Children - less or no more missed school
● Reduce potential of child to carry IBS/FAP condition into adulthood, thereby saving NHS expenditures.
● For Parents - eliminate or reduce necessity of taking off work to care for sick child and/or caregiver expenses.
● The IBSAP costs less than any other psychological intervention recommended in the NICE Guidelines: Average psychological intervention cost of £290.85 per patient in NICE Costing Template vs. £65 per patient with the IBSAP. Savings of £226 per person. This is also true for personal therapy costs in the United States, with total fees between $500 - $1000.
The IBSAP need only be repeated for further progress, and support via website, email or phone is included.
● Most IBS patients, especially children, as well as many physicians may find it more beneficial to the patient to avoid continual or even limited use of both OTC and prescription medications, including TCAs (Tricyclic Antidepressants) and SSRIs (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), especially long-term medication use, preferring to first recommend the least invasive treatment available - which would be a psychological intervention; with hypnotherapy as the most effective and most researched, as well as the most cost effective method to deliver this treatment being the IBSAP.
